Katie Lyle

Katie Lyle has been making figure-based work since her grad thesis at University of Victoria in 2009. Her paintings hover around a 1 to 1 scale with the human figure, which compel a kind of mirroring response when viewed in person. Her portraits are exclusively of women, in an interview with Hermie Island she explains, "I guess for me, the conversation about gender and femininity is related to thinking about how we act versus how we are conditioned to act, what our heads are saying compared to a natural response and what is just embedded or natural." Lyle`s solo exhibition Gene Pool was up at Erin Stump Projects in Toronto in this past spring.
