Michael DeForge

This week's Portrait Monday is brought to you by Michael DeForge and Winsor Gallery's Alex M. F. Quicho.

Toronto-based illustrator Michael DeForge is a wildly imaginative force to be reckoned with. His drawings teem with detail to the point of grotesqueness: pattern, symbol, and object are coagulated into strange worlds and weird, tenuous beings. I can only think of his mind as a visual encyclopedia for all sorts of daily minutiae that become, through synthesis, these crazy, post-industrial ecosystems or characters. The work is fun, dark, playful, disturbing, and utterly absorbing. If you're craving a physical iteration of these drawings, Lucky's Comics is the local purveyor of his books.
