Gary Pearson brings Ken Lum's art practice into sharp focus, detailing the ideas and motivations behind iconic works such as everyone's favourite
Monument to East Vancouver and the labyrinthine
Mirror Maze with 12 Signs of Depression. An Associate Professor for Critical and Cultural Studies at the University of British Columbia's Okanagan, Pearson clearly locates Lum's practice within the socio-political sphere of greater Vancouver, and is quick to pick up on latent elements of unofficial urban histories, human narrative, and pop psychology within the work. Paired with essays on Do Ho Suh and Liz Magor (another Vancouver resident who has been garnering much attention lately), Pearson's knowledgeable investigation of one of our city's most iconic commentators makes this month's
Sculpture well worth picking up.
